Derivational Suffixes -lI / -sIz / -lIk

Level A1Derivational Suffixes

The suffixes that build new words from nouns: «-lI» (with), «-sIz» (without) and «-lIk».

In Turkish new words are derived with derivational suffixes. The three most used in everyday life are «-lı», «-sız» and «-lık».

The suffix «-lı, -li, -lu, -lü» says that something is present, that it is in it: şekerli çay, sütlü kahve, tuzlu yemek, bahçeli ev, paralı yol.

The same suffix also says where a person comes from: İstanbul - İstanbullu, Afyon - Afyonlu, Afrika - Afrikalı, Çin - Çinli. The question «Nerelisiniz?» is answered with this suffix.

The suffix «-sız, -siz, -suz, -süz» says the opposite, that something is absent: şekersiz çay, tuzsuz yemek, parasız, işsiz, sessiz. «-lı» and «-sız» are opposites: sütlü - sütsüz.

The suffix «-lık, -lik, -luk, -lük» does three different jobs. First, it names the container something is kept in or the tool used for it: tuz - tuzluk, şeker - şekerlik, göz - gözlük, kitap - kitaplık, buz - buzluk.

Second, it forms abstract nouns: güzel - güzellik, iyi - iyilik, arkadaş - arkadaşlık, çocuk - çocukluk.

Third, it states duration, measure and quantity: bir haftalık tatil, iki günlük iş, beş kişilik masa, üç aylık bebek.

All three suffixes obey vowel harmony. If the last vowel is a or ı: -lı, -sız, -lık; if e or i: -li, -siz, -lik; if o or u: -lu, -suz, -luk; if ö or ü: -lü, -süz, -lük.

These are derivational suffixes, that is, they build a new word. Plural, possessive and case suffixes come after them: gözlük - gözlükler - gözlüklerim - gözlüklerimi.

These suffixes are very useful in cafés, restaurants and shopping: «Çayınız şekerli mi, şekersiz mi?», «Üç kişilik bir masa lütfen.»
