Turkish Grammar › Verb Conjugation

İstek Kipi (-(y)AyIm / -(y)AlIm)

Voluntative (Let Me / Let Us)

Level A1Verb Conjugation

The form that expresses what the speaker wants to do and what they suggest doing together.

The optative expresses what the speaker wants to do, or a suggestion made to the listener: «Ben bakayım.», «Hadi sinemaya gidelim.»

Since the imperative has no «ben» or «biz» form, the optative fills that gap. That is why in everyday Turkish the first person forms of the optative are the ones most often used.

For «ben» the ending is «-ayım, -eyim»: bakayım, sorayım, gideyim, geleyim. Verbs with back vowels take «-ayım», verbs with front vowels take «-eyim».

For «biz» the ending is «-alım, -elim»: bakalım, soralım, gidelim, gelelim.

If the verb ends in a vowel, the buffer letter «y» comes in: bekle - bekleyeyim, bekleyelim; oku - okuyayım, okuyalım; başla - başlayalım.

In the negative, «-ma, -me» comes first and the optative ending follows; since the negative suffix ends in a vowel, a buffer «y» comes in: gitmeyeyim, gitmeyelim, beklemeyelim.

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately. Such a question is a suggestion or a request for permission: «Gidelim mi?», «Pencereyi açayım mı?», «Sana yardım edeyim mi?»

Optative sentences often begin with words such as «hadi», «haydi», «isterseniz», «gel»: «Hadi başlayalım.», «Gel, biraz yürüyelim.»

The forms of this mood in the other persons (gelesin, gele, gelesiniz, geleler) are not used in everyday speech; they appear mostly in proverbs, prayers and poetry. At A1 level it is enough to know the «ben» and «biz» forms.
