Gelecek Zaman (-(y)AcAk)

Future Tense

Level A2Verb Conjugation

The tense for actions that have not happened yet; it states plans, promises and predictions.

The future tense describes actions that will happen after the moment of speaking: «Yarın sinemaya gideceğim.», «Hafta sonu dinleneceğiz.»

Its suffix is «-acak, -ecek» and it obeys vowel harmony: verbs with back vowels take -acak (bakacak, alacak), verbs with front vowels take -ecek (gelecek, bilecek).

If the verb ends in a vowel, the buffer letter «y» comes in: bekle - bekleyecek, oku - okuyacak, başla - başlayacak, uyu - uyuyacak.

The personal endings follow the suffix: geleceğim, geleceksin, gelecek, geleceğiz, geleceksiniz, gelecekler.

Careful: in the first person singular and plural the final «k» of the suffix stands between two vowels, so it softens into «ğ»: gelecek + im → geleceğim, gelecek + iz → geleceğiz. In the other persons the «k» stays as it is.

In the negative the verb first takes «-ma, -me»; since the negative suffix ends in a vowel, a buffer «y» comes in: gelmeyeceğim, bakmayacak, okumayacağız.

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately and the personal ending attaches to the particle: «Gelecek misin?», «Yarın çalışacak mıyız?»

In everyday speech you hear «gelicem» instead of «geleceğim» and «yapıcam» instead of «yapacağım». These belong to pronunciation only; in writing the full form is always used.

This tense is often used with these words: yarın, birazdan, sonra, ileride, gelecek hafta, gelecek yıl, ertesi gün.

A fixed arrangement can also be expressed with the present tense: «Yarın saat üçte doktora gidiyorum.» The meaning is the same, but the sentence built with the future suffix is clearer.
