Şimdiki Zamanın Rivayeti (-(I)yormuş)

Evidential Present Continuous

Level B1Compound Tenses

States that we heard from someone else about something going on right now: Ali çalışıyormuş.

At A2 you learned the suffix «-mIş»: it described past actions the speaker had not seen but heard from someone else. The same sense of «hearsay» can be added to the other tenses too. In this unit you will meet the reported forms of three tenses.

The reported present progressive says that we heard from someone else about something going on RIGHT NOW: «Ali şu anda çalışıyormuş.» The speaker does not see Ali but has heard about him.

The form combines two suffixes: the present progressive «-Iyor» + the reported suffix «-muş» + the personal ending. Gel-iyor-muş-um.

In this form the reported suffix is ALWAYS «-muş». The reason is that the last vowel of «-Iyor» is «o», that is, back and rounded, and vowel harmony therefore calls for «-muş». No other form occurs: geliyormuş, bakıyormuş, gülüyormuş, okuyormuş.

The conjugation is: geliyormuşum, geliyormuşsun, geliyormuş, geliyormuşuz, geliyormuşsunuz, geliyorlarmış.

In the negative the negative suffix attaches to the verb: gelmiyormuş, çalışmıyormuş, bakmıyorlarmış.

In questions «mu» is written separately and the reported suffix moves onto the particle: «Geliyor muymuş?», «Ders çalışıyor muymuşsunuz?»

Its first use is passing on what one has heard: «Ayşe şu anda hastanede çalışıyormuş.», «Yeni komşular yarın taşınıyormuş.»

Its second use is realising something afterwards. The speaker understands at that moment and is surprised: «Meğer bizi kapıda bekliyormuş!», «Demek bunca zamandır biliyormuş.»

Its third use is disbelief or gentle mockery. The end of the sentence is said with emphasis: «Çok çalışıyormuş!» — the speaker makes clear that he does not believe it.

Frequently used words: duyduğuma göre, meğer, demek, güya, sözde.

This suffix is not used for something you have seen yourself. You say «Ali çalışıyor.»; saying «Ali çalışıyormuş.» means you heard it from someone else.
