İşteşlik ve «birbiri» (-(I)ş-)

Reciprocal Voice and “birbiri”

Level B1Voice

Actions done to each other or together, and the use of the pronoun «birbiri».

The reciprocal voice shows that an action is done TO EACH OTHER or TOGETHER. The verb takes «-ış, -iş, -uş, -üş»: bak-ış-mak, gör-üş-mek, selamla-ş-mak.

The suffix obeys vowel harmony. If the verb ends in a vowel, only «-ş» is added: selamla - selamlaşmak, anla - anlaşmak, kucakla - kucaklaşmak.

The first meaning is RECIPROCITY: each side does the same thing to the other. «Ömer ile Pınar bakıştılar.» — Ömer looked at Pınar and Pınar at Ömer. «Kapıda öpüştüler.», «Uzun uzun görüştük.»

The second meaning is TOGETHERNESS or MULTITUDE: many people or things do the same thing together. «Kuşlar havada uçuştu.», «Çocuklar bahçede koşuştular.»

Some verbs are used only in the reciprocal form and have no plain form: buluşmak, kavuşmak, savaşmak, yarışmak.

Reciprocal verbs are mostly used with «ile» or the ending «-lA»: «Ali'yle görüştüm.», «Arkadaşımla buluşacağım.», «Komşumuzla selamlaşırız.»

When the subject is plural, «ile» may be left out: «Özlem ile Erdem tanıştılar.» or «Onlar tanıştılar.»

Reciprocity is also expressed by the pronoun «birbiri». It takes possessive endings: birbirimiz, birbiriniz, birbirleri.

«birbiri» also takes case endings in the sentence: birbirimizi (görüyoruz), birbirimize (yardım ediyoruz), birbirimizden (hoşlanıyoruz), birbirimizle (konuşuyoruz).

A reciprocal verb and the pronoun «birbiri» are usually not used together, since both carry the same meaning: instead of «Birbirimizle görüştük.» it is enough to say «Görüştük.»

Reciprocity is a matter of voice. In this unit you will meet the reflexive, and in later units the causative and the passive; in the end all three will be used together.
