Turkish Grammar › Compound Tenses
Geniş Zamanın Rivayeti (-(A/I)rmIş)
Evidential Aorist
Level B1Compound Tenses
States habits and general truths that we have heard about: dedem her sabah koşarmış.
The reported aorist says that we heard about a HABIT or a general truth from someone else: «Dedem gençken her sabah koşarmış.»
The form combines two suffixes: the aorist «-(A/I)r» + the reported suffix «-mIş» + the personal ending. Gel-ir-miş.
Unlike the previous topic, here the reported suffix DOES change with vowel harmony, because the vowel of the aorist suffix varies: gelirmiş, bakarmış, okurmuş, gülermiş.
The conjugation is: gelirmişim, gelirmişsin, gelirmiş, gelirmişiz, gelirmişsiniz, gelirlermiş.
The negative is built on the negative aorist: gelmezmiş, bakmazmış, çalışmazmış.
In questions the particle is written separately: «Her gün gelir miymiş?»
Its first use is habits one has heard about: «Eskiden bu köyde herkes tarlada çalışırmış.», «Babaannem hiç et yemezmiş.»
Its second use is the language of folk tales and legends. In tales both «-mIş» and «-(A/I)rmIş» are used together: «Padişahın üç oğlu varmış; her sabah ava çıkarlarmış.»
Its third use is general truths one has heard: «Bu bitki yalnızca yüksek yerlerde yetişirmiş.»
Its difference from the reported present is the same as the difference between the aorist and the present: «Çalışıyormuş.» is going on right now, «Çalışırmış.» is a habit done all the time.
