Şimdiki Zamanın Hikâyesi (-(I)yordu)
Past Continuous Tense
Level A2Verb Conjugation
Describes actions that were going on in the past: dün akşam ders çalışıyordum.
This form describes actions that went on for a while in the past: «Dün akşam ders çalışıyordum.» The action began in the past and continued for some time.
The form combines two suffixes: the present tense «-Iyor» + the definite past «-dU» + the personal ending. Gel-iyor-du-m.
The conjugation is: geliyordum, geliyordun, geliyordu, geliyorduk, geliyordunuz, geliyorlardı. In the third person plural «geliyordular» is also said, but «geliyorlardı» is more common.
The difference from the definite past matters. «Dün kitap okudum.» says the action was completed; «Dün kitap okuyordum.» says it was going on at the time.
That is why two actions are usually used together: one is going on and the other cuts in. «Ben ders çalışıyordum, telefon çaldı.», «Yemek yiyorduk, kapı çaldı.»
Its second use is habits in the past: «Çocukken her gün parkta oynuyorduk.», «O yıllarda her sabah erken kalkıyordum.»
In the negative the negative suffix comes first: gelmiyordum, çalışmıyorduk, bakmıyorlardı.
In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately and the past tense suffix moves onto the particle: «Geliyor muydun?», «Ders çalışıyor muydunuz?»
Words often used with this form: o sırada, o sıralar, tam o anda, dün akşam, çocukken, o yıllarda.
This topic will be taken up again as a whole at B1 level, together with the other compound tenses (the past of the aorist, the past of the future).
