Olumsuz Durum Ulacı (-mAdAn)

Negative Manner Converb

Level A2Converbs

The converb that says one action happened without the other being done at all: yemek yemeden çıktım.

The suffix «-madan, -meden» says that one action happened WITHOUT another being done: «Yemek yemeden çıktım.» — I did not eat, and left like that.

The suffix has only two forms and obeys vowel harmony: verbs with back vowels take «-madan» (bakmadan, sormadan), verbs with front vowels take «-meden» (gitmeden, bilmeden).

The verb carrying the converb is not conjugated; the tense and personal ending go on the second verb: «Sormadan aldım.», «Sormadan alacağım.»

The two actions must have the same subject: the one who does not ask and the one who takes are the same person.

This converb is the negative counterpart of «-(y)ArAk». «Bakarak yürüdü.» - «Bakmadan yürüdü.» One does the action, the other does not.

Do not confuse it with the «-mAdAn önce» pattern you learned at A1. «Yemeden çıktım.» says I did not eat at all; «Yemeden önce çıktım.» says I left before eating, so perhaps I ate later.

There are set phrases used a great deal in everyday language: durmadan (hiç durmadan çalıştı), farkına varmadan, düşünmeden, hiç beklemeden.

The phrase «durmadan» has come to mean «continually»: «Çocuk durmadan konuşuyor.»

It also appears often in warnings and advice: «Bakmadan karşıya geçme.», «Düşünmeden konuşma.»
