Sebep Ulaçları (-DIk / -(y)AcAk + iyelik için, -(n)DAn)

Causal Clauses

Level B2Converbs

Expresses the reason for an action with a suffix: hasta olduğum için, yorulduğundan.

These structures express the REASON for an action or situation: «Hasta olduğum için toplantıya gelemedim.»

The first structure is: verb + «-DIk» / «-(y)AcAk» + possessive suffix + «için». It does the same job as «çünkü», which you learned in A2, but in a single clause without a comma: hasta olduğum için = çünkü hastaydım.

Do not confuse this with A2's «-mAk için»: «-mAk için» expresses PURPOSE («Kitap okumak için geldim.» — I came in order to read), while this structure expresses REASON («Kitap okuduğum için geç kaldım.» — reading is the reason I was late). «-mAk» is the uninflected infinitive, while the suffix here takes «-DIk»/«-(y)AcAk» + possessive.

The second structure gives the same meaning without «için», using only the ablative suffix «-(n)DAn»: yorulduğumdan, hastalandığından. It is very common in everyday speech and shorter than «için».

The possessive suffix shows who experiences the reason: geldiğim için, geldiğinden, geldiğimiz için. If the subject differs, the possessive changes too: «Sen geldiğin için mutluyum.»

The reason can also be in the future; the suffix is again «-(y)AcAk»: «Yarın sınava gireceğim için çalışıyorum.»

The negative form is regular: gelmediğim için, bilmediğinden, yarın orada olmayacağımdan.

This structure works differently from «çünkü», which you learned in A2: «çünkü» links two separate sentences, while these suffixes place the reason INSIDE the same sentence, as a nominalised part.

Both structures («için» and «-(n)DAn») are very common in spoken language; which one is chosen is mostly a matter of personal preference.
