Nedenleştirme (-DAn dolayı / nedeniyle / yüzünden / diye)

Expressing Cause

Level B2Postpositions

Postpositions expressing reason with nouns: trafik yüzünden, hastalık nedeniyle, yağmurdan dolayı.

In the previous topic you saw how to express reason with verbs. These postpositions, however, express reason directly with NOUNS: «Trafik yüzünden geç kaldım.»

«yüzünden» attaches directly to the noun, needs no suffix, and usually expresses the reason for a NEGATIVE result: «Hastalık yüzünden okula gidemedi.»

«nedeniyle» also attaches directly to the noun; it is more neutral, can be used with both positive and negative results, and is common in formal texts: «Başarısı nedeniyle ödül aldı.», «Fırtına nedeniyle uçuş iptal edildi.»

«-DAn dolayı» does the same job, but the noun before it requires the ABLATIVE suffix: «Yağmurdan dolayı maç ertelendi.» This is different from «yüzünden» and «nedeniyle», which are used with the bare noun.

«diye», on the other hand, follows a nominal clause or a whole sentence and is very common in everyday speech: «Param yok diye gelmedi.» It is sometimes used to prevent an anticipated, not-yet-happened outcome: «Yağmur yağar diye şemsiye aldım.»

All four answer the same question — Why? — but differ in style: «yüzünden» suggests negativity, «nedeniyle» and «-DAn dolayı» formality, «diye» everyday speech.

Do not confuse these with the verb-based reason structures from the previous topic («olduğu için», «-(n)DAn»): those attach to VERBS, these postpositions to NOUNS. «Hasta olduğum için gelemedim.» and «Hastalık yüzünden gelemedim.» give the same meaning in two different ways.

All four structures usually stand at the beginning of the sentence, with the result clause following.

«yüzünden» and «diye» are more common in everyday speech, while «nedeniyle» and «-DAn dolayı» are more common in written language.

You will often see these postpositions in the news and official writing: «Sağlık Bakanlığı, artan vaka sayıları nedeniyle yeni tedbirler açıkladı.»
