Reported Speech: Nominal Sentences

Level B2Reported Speech

Reporting nominal sentences with the help of «ol-»: Ali'nin hasta olduğunu söyledi.

In the last topic of this unit you will see how nominal sentences are reported: «Ali hasta.» → «Ali'nin hasta olduğunu söyledi.»

The difficulty here is that a nominal sentence has no verb to conjugate. In «Ali hasta.» the predicate is an adjective, but the nominalising suffix needs a verb.

The solution is the same one you learned in A2: the verb «ol-» is inserted. There you used «olacak» to put a nominal sentence in the future; here you use «olduğunu» to report it.

The structure is: noun or adjective + «ol-» + «-DIk» + possessive suffix + accusative. Hasta ol-duğ-un-u.

The subject of the original sentence again takes the genitive: «Havanın güzel olduğunu söyledi.», «Ali'nin öğretmen olduğunu biliyorum.»

«değil» is not used in the negative form; the negative of the verb «ol-» is used instead: «Ali hasta değil.» → «Ali'nin hasta olmadığını söyledi.»

For the future, «-(y)AcAk» is used: «Yarın hava güzel olacak.» → «Yarın havanın güzel olacağını söyledi.»

Sentences with «var» and «yok» are reported the same way: «Param var.» → «Parasının olduğunu söyledi.»; «Param yok.» → «Parasının olmadığını söyledi.»

Note: when «var» is reported it becomes «olduğunu», and when «yok» is reported it becomes «olmadığını». Both turn into the verb «ol-».

This structure is common in sentences expressing thought and knowledge: «Bunun doğru olduğunu düşünüyorum.», «Onun haklı olduğunu anladım.», «Sorunun kolay olmadığını gördük.»

It is also common in everyday speech: «Yorgun olduğunu söyledi.», «Evde olmadığını biliyorum.»

This topic completes the reported speech unit. The same logic applied in all three topics: the predicate of the reported sentence is nominalised, its subject takes the genitive, and the reporting verb comes at the end.
