Turkish Grammar › Verb Conjugation
Resmî Şimdiki Zaman (-mAktA)
Formal Present Continuous
Level A2Verb Conjugation
The present tense of news language and official writing: «Çalışmalar sürmektedir.»
The suffix «-makta, -mekte» is the formal form of the present tense. Its meaning is the same as «-Iyor», but the register differs: «Çalışmalar devam ediyor.» is everyday, «Çalışmalar devam etmektedir.» is formal.
The suffix has only two forms and obeys vowel harmony: verbs with back vowels take «-makta» (bakmakta, çalışmakta), verbs with front vowels take «-mekte» (gelmekte, bilmekte).
The personal endings follow the suffix: gelmekteyim, gelmektesin, gelmekte, gelmekteyiz, gelmektesiniz, gelmekteler.
Usually the suffix «-DIr» is added at the end as well and the sentence becomes thoroughly formal: «Sıcaklıklar artmaktadır.», «Toplantı sürmektedir.» This combination is the most familiar pattern of news and announcement language.
In the negative the verb first takes «-ma, -me»: «Yağış beklenmemektedir.», «Bu konu görüşülmemektedir.»
The question form is almost never used in everyday language, and it is rare even in formal writing.
This suffix appears in newspaper reports, official correspondence, academic texts and announcements: «Ülkemizde 5 milyon öğrenci bulunmaktadır.», «Başvurular 15 Mayıs'ta sona ermektedir.»
It is not used in everyday speech. Instead of saying «Şu anda gelmekteyim.» to a friend, you say «Şu anda geliyorum.»
As a learner, RECOGNISING this suffix matters more than producing it: you will meet it often when reading news, announcements and official texts.
