Yeterlilik Fiili (-(y)Ebil- / -(y)AmA-)

Ability and Inability

Level A2Verb Constructions

The pattern for ability, permission and possibility: yüzebilirim, gelemem, gelmeyebilir.

The pattern «-(y)ebil-, -(y)abil-» expresses the ability, the permission or the possibility of doing something: «Yüzebilirim.», «İçeri girebilir miyim?», «Yarın yağmur yağabilir.»

The pattern has two parts: main verb + «-(y)ebil, -(y)abil» + tense and personal ending. Gel-ebil-ir-im, yap-abil-ir-sin, gör-ebil-ecek.

If the verb ends in a vowel, a buffer «y» comes in: bekle - bekleyebilir, oku - okuyabilir, başla - başlayabilir.

It is most often used with the aorist: gelebilirim, yapabilirsin, görebilir. But it can be built with other tenses too: «Dün gelebildim.», «Yarın gelebileceğim.»

The negative is the most important point of this topic, because the «bil» part drops and «-(y)ama, -(y)eme» takes its place: gelemem, yapamazsın, göremez, gidemeyiz.

The rule from the negative aorist holds here as well: the first person singular is «gelemem» and the first person plural «gelemeyiz».

This negative form carries the sense «I am unable, I have not the strength, it is out of my hands»: «Bu soruyu çözemiyorum.», «Yarın gelemem, işim var.»

There is a second negative form, and its meaning is quite different: «-me» + «-(y)ebil» expresses the negative of possibility. «Gelmeyebilir.» = maybe he will not come. «Gelemez.» = he is unable to come.

In the question form it is used to ask permission and is very polite: «İçeri girebilir miyim?», «Pencereyi açabilir miyim?», «Bana yardım edebilir misiniz?»

The pattern also states possibility: «Yarın yağmur yağabilir.», «Ali gelmiş olabilir.» Here the speaker is not certain.

This topic will be taken up again at C1 level, together with the rapidity and continuity verbs, as the family of «compound verbs».
