Linking Converb
Level A2Converbs
The converb that links two consecutive actions in one sentence: eve gidip yattım.
The suffix «-ıp, -ip, -up, -üp» links two actions in sequence. The action of the converb verb happens first, then the second: «Eve gidip yattım.» — first I went home, then I went to bed.
The suffix obeys vowel harmony: bakıp, gelip, okuyup, gülüp.
If the verb ends in a vowel, the buffer letter «y» comes in: oku - okuyup, bekle - bekleyip, başla - başlayıp.
The verb carrying the converb is NOT conjugated. The tense and personal ending go only on the second verb, but they cover both: «Duş alıp kahvaltı yaptım.» means «Duş aldım ve kahvaltı yaptım.»
That is why the pattern replaces the conjunction «ve» and makes the sentence flow better. Instead of «Kalktım ve giyindim ve çıktım.» one says «Kalkıp giyinip çıktım.»
The two actions must have the SAME subject. In «Ali gelip oturdu.» the one who comes and the one who sits are both Ali.
Order matters: the action done first takes the converb suffix. «Yemek yiyip çıktım.» and «Çıkıp yemek yedim.» say different things.
Its negative form is «-mayıp, -meyip»: «Beklemeyip gitti.», «Cevap vermeyip sustu.»
In questions the question particle attaches only to the second verb: «Eve gidip yattın mı?»
