General Nominalisation

Level B2Nominalisation

A system for turning a clause into the object or complement of another verb: geldiğini biliyorum, gelmesini istiyorum.

In A2 you learned to nominalise a verb with the suffix «-mA»: «gelmemi istiyor». Now you will see that «-DIk» and «-(y)AcAk» do the same job.

All three fit the same pattern: verb + nominalising suffix + possessive suffix + case suffix. Which suffix to choose depends on the MAIN VERB.

«-DIk» is used for a real, experienced, or known situation: «Geldiğini biliyorum.», «Gittiğini gördüm.», «Söylediğini unuttum.»

«-mA» is used for a not-yet-realised, desired, or expected situation: «Gelmemi istiyor.», «Erken kalkmamı söyledi.», «Susmamı rica etti.»

«-(y)AcAk» is used for a situation that will happen in the future: «Geleceğini umuyorum.», «Kazanacağımıza inanıyorum.»

The case suffix changes according to its role in the sentence: accusative (with bilmek, istemek, görmek, duymak), dative (with sevinmek, inanmak, alışmak), locative (with emin olmak), ablative (with haberi olmak, korkmak).

The same verb can sometimes be used with more than one suffix, changing the meaning: the difference between «Geldiğini biliyorum.» (realised) and «Geleceğini biliyorum.» (not yet realised but certain) is one of time.

The subject of the nominalised clause can be DIFFERENT from the subject of the main clause; the possessive suffix comes into play here: «(Ben) senin geldiğini biliyorum.» — the one who knows is me, the one who came is you.

While A2's «-mA» only nominalises an action, this unit completes the nominalisation system: you can now nominalise past, present, future, and desire/necessity meanings alike.

This structure is extremely common in both everyday speech and written language; it appears in almost every sentence expressing thought, knowledge, or feeling: «Yanlış yaptığımı fark ettim.», «Kazanacağına eminim.», «Beni sevdiğinden şüphem yok.»
