Turkish Grammar › Converbs
Karşıtlık Hâli (-DIk / -(y)AcAk + iyelik hâlde)
Concessive “Whereas”
Level B2Converbs
Describes a situation contrary to what is expected: param olmadığı hâlde o kitabı aldım.
This converb expresses a situation contrary to what is expected: «Param olmadığı hâlde o kitabı aldım.» — despite not having money, I bought it.
The structure is: verb + «-DIk» / «-(y)AcAk» + possessive suffix + «hâlde». Bil-diğ-i hâlde.
The possessive suffix shows the subject: bildiğim hâlde, bildiğin hâlde, bildiği hâlde, bildiğimiz hâlde, bildiğiniz hâlde, bildikleri hâlde.
«-DIk» is used for the past and present; «-(y)AcAk» for the future: «Kazanacağı hâlde yarışmadı.»
This structure is very close in meaning to the postpositions «rağmen/karşın» you will see later; both belong to the concessive family.
The negative form is regular: bilmediği hâlde, gelmeyeceği hâlde.
The main clause usually states an unexpected result; emphasising this contrary relation is the essence of the structure.
This structure is common in written language; it is also used in formal and literary texts.
Instead of «hâlde», the unaccented «halde» is also sometimes written; both are used, but the TDK recommends «hâlde».
Compare: «Hasta olduğu hâlde işe gitti.» describes an unexpected behaviour; «Hasta olduğu için işe gitmedi.» describes an expected result. Both use «-DIk», but their meanings are opposite.
