Turkish Grammar › Converbs
Karşıtlık Ulacı (-mAsInA rağmen / karşın)
Concessive Converb “Despite”
Level B2Converbs
Expresses contrast with verbs: yorgun olmasına rağmen çalıştı, param olmamasına karşın seyahate çıktım.
In B1 you saw the postpositions «rağmen» and «karşın» with nouns: «Yağmura rağmen maç oynandı.» Now you will learn to use these postpositions with VERBS.
The structure is: verb + «-mA» (nominalisation) + possessive + dative «-(n)A» + rağmen/karşın. Yorul-ma-sı-na rağmen.
The possessive suffix shows the subject: olmama rağmen (I), olmana rağmen (you), olmasına rağmen (he/she), olmamıza rağmen (we). The «-mAsInA» in the topic title is the third person singular example, but the structure works with every person.
«rağmen» and «karşın» are completely synonymous; «karşın» has a pure Turkish origin and feels slightly more formal in writing.
This structure gives almost the same meaning as «-DIk/-(y)AcAk + possessive + hâlde» from the previous topic: «Yorgun olduğu hâlde çalıştı.» = «Yorgun olmasına rağmen çalıştı.» The difference is only in form.
The negative form is regular: gelmemesine rağmen, bilmemesine karşın.
The converb itself is not conjugated; the tense of the sentence is read from the main verb.
This structure is a natural extension of the «-mA + possessive» pattern you saw in the General Nominalisation topic: the same pattern here takes the dative and combines with «rağmen/karşın».
It is common in both everyday speech and written language; it is especially preferred when describing unexpected or contradictory situations.
