Gelecek Zamanın Hikâyesi (-(y)AcAktI)

Future in the Past

Level B1Compound Tenses

Describes things planned in the past that did not happen: dün gelecektim ama hastalandım.

This form describes things planned in the past that DID NOT HAPPEN: «Dün size gelecektim ama hastalandım.» There was a plan; it was not carried out.

The form combines two suffixes: the future «-(y)AcAk» + the definite past «-DI» + the personal ending. Gel-ecek-ti-m.

The conjugation is: gelecektim, gelecektin, gelecekti, gelecektik, gelecektiniz, geleceklerdi. Since the final «k» of the suffix is voiceless, the past tense suffix devoices: «-tı, -ti».

In the negative the negative suffix attaches to the verb: «Gelmeyecektim ama fikrimi değiştirdim.»

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately: «Bugün gelecek miydiniz?»

The sentence usually has two parts: first the plan, then what spoiled it. «Sana telefon edecektim, unuttum.», «Toplantıya katılacaktık, trafiğe takıldık.»

Its second use is describing an event that lay in the future seen from a point in the past: «O gün akşam sinemaya gidecektik, bütün gün onu konuştuk.» Here the thing may well have happened.

Its third use is a polite opening: «Size bir şey soracaktım.» The speaker is in fact going to ask now; this form softens the sentence and makes it polite.

The same politeness appears in requests: «Bir bilgi alacaktım.», «Randevu almak istiyordum.» These phrases are much used in shops, offices and on the telephone.

Do not confuse it with the past necessitative: «Gelmeliydim.» says coming was NECESSARY but was not done; «Gelecektim.» says I PLANNED to come but did not.
