Gerekliliğin Hikâyesi (-mAlIydI)

Past Necessitative

Level B1Compound Tenses

Something that was necessary in the past but was not done: it states regret and criticism.

This form describes something that should have been done in the past but WAS NOT: «Dün erken yatmalıydım.» That is, I needed to go to bed early, but I did not.

The form combines two suffixes: the necessitative «-mAlI» + the definite past «-(y)dI» + the personal ending. Gel-meli-y-di-m.

The conjugation is: gelmeliydim, gelmeliydin, gelmeliydi, gelmeliydik, gelmeliydiniz, gelmeliydiler.

In the negative the negative suffix attaches to the verb: «Bunu söylememeliydim.», «Bu kadar çok yememeliydik.»

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately: «Ona söylemeli miydim?», «Daha erken çıkmalı mıydık?»

The strongest feeling this form carries is REGRET. The speaker is sorry about something not done or done wrongly: «Keşke dinleseydim, sana kızmamalıydım.»

Its second use is CRITICISM. It is used to criticise something someone else failed to do: «Bana haber vermeliydin!», «Toplantıya zamanında gelmeliydiniz.»

The difference from the present necessitative is clear: «Gitmeliyim.» — the thing has not been done yet but still can be; «Gitmeliydim.» — it can no longer be done, the moment has passed.
