Geniş Zamanın Hikâyesi (-(A/I)rdI)

Past Aorist (Habitual Past)

Level B1Compound Tenses

Describes habits repeated in the past: çocukken her gün parkta oynardık.

This form describes habits regularly repeated in the past: «Çocukken her gün parkta oynardık.», «Dedem her sabah gazete okurdu.»

The form combines two suffixes: the aorist «-(A/I)r» + the definite past «-DI» + the personal ending. Gel-ir-di-m.

The conjugation is: gelirdim, gelirdin, gelirdi, gelirdik, gelirdiniz, gelirlerdi.

The difference from the past progressive («-(I)yordu») you learned at A2 matters. «Dün akşam kitap okuyordum.» describes a single event going on at a particular moment; «Her akşam kitap okurdum.» describes a repeated habit.

That is why the two go with different words: «-(I)yordu» with o sırada, tam o anda, dün akşam; «-(A/I)rdI» with her gün, her yaz, çoğu zaman, eskiden.

The negative is built on the negative aorist: gelmezdim, gelmezdin, gelmezdi, gelmezdik.

One point deserves attention: in the aorist itself the negative first person is irregular («gelmem», «gelmeyiz»), but in its past form there is NO such irregularity. One regularly says «gelmezdim», «gelmezdik».

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately: «Her yaz denize gider miydiniz?»

Its second use is general truths in the past: «Eskiden bu sokakta hiç araba geçmezdi.»

This form appears a great deal in memoirs. Someone telling of their childhood uses it in almost every sentence: «Yazları köye giderdik, akşamları bahçede otururduk, dedem bize masal anlatırdı.»

This form also builds the result of unreal conditional sentences: «Bilseydim gelirdim.» You will meet the conditional later in this unit.
