Turkish Grammar › Compound Tenses
Gelecek Zamanın Rivayeti (-(y)AcAkmIş)
Evidential Future
Level B1Compound Tenses
States plans and intentions heard from someone else: toplantı iptal olacakmış.
The reported future says that we heard from someone else about something that will happen: «Ali yarın gelecekmiş.», «Toplantı iptal olacakmış.»
The form combines two suffixes: the future «-(y)AcAk» + the reported suffix «-mIş» + the personal ending. Gel-ecek-miş.
The conjugation is: gelecekmişim, gelecekmişsin, gelecekmiş, gelecekmişiz, gelecekmişsiniz, geleceklermiş.
In the negative the negative suffix attaches to the verb: gelmeyecekmiş, yapmayacakmış, katılmayacaklarmış.
In questions the particle is written separately: «Gerçekten gelecek miymiş?»
Its first use is plans and schedules one has heard about: «Yarın okullar tatil olacakmış.», «Yeni müdür gelecek ay başlayacakmış.»
Its second use is passing on news heard in everyday conversation: «Duydun mu, taşınıyorlarmış; yeni evleri şehir dışında olacakmış.»
Its third use is disbelief or gentle mockery: «Bana yardım edecekmiş!» The speaker makes clear that he does not believe the person who said it.
Frequently used words: duyduğuma göre, söylediklerine göre, güya, sözde, iddiaya göre.
These three reported forms share the same logic: the verb suffix fixes the tense, while «-mIş» says the information was heard. Thinking of the reported present, aorist and future together is the easiest way.
