Gelecek Zaman İsim Cümlesi (ol- + -(y)AcAk)
Future of Nominal Sentences
Level A2Sentence Structure
The verb «ol-» that puts nominal sentences into the future: doktor olacağım, hava güzel olacak.
You know the present form of nominal sentences («Ben öğrenciyim.») and their past form («Ben öğrenciydim.»). For the future no suffix attaches to the noun itself; the verb «ol-» is used: «Ben öğretmen olacağım.»
The pattern is: noun or adjective + ol- + «-acak, -ecek» + personal ending. Doktor olacağım, mutlu olacaksın, hazır olacak, komşu olacağız.
Here «ol-» means «to come into a state, to become». «Öğrenciyim» states the present situation, while «öğrenci olacağım» states a change.
The negative is built by negating «ol-»: «Ben doktor olmayacağım.», «Yarın hava güzel olmayacak.» The word «değil», used to negate nominal sentences, does not appear here.
In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately: «Yarın evde olacak mısın?», «Toplantı uzun olacak mı?»
Sentences with «var» and «yok» are moved into the future the same way: «olacak» replaces «var» and «olmayacak» replaces «yok». «Yarın dersimiz olacak.», «Yarın dersimiz olmayacak.»
It is much used in sentences about weather, states and age: «Yarın hava çok sıcak olacak.», «Gelecek yıl otuz yaşında olacağım.»
The pattern is also used for professions and goals. It answers the question «Ne olacaksın?»: «Mühendis olacağım.»
It is used together with time words: yarın, gelecek hafta, gelecek yıl, ileride, birkaç yıl sonra.
