Correlative Conjunctions

Level A2Conjunctions

Conjunctions that work in two parts; with «ne … ne» the verb stays positive.

Some conjunctions are used not alone but in TWO PARTS. Each part stands before one of the elements being joined: hem … hem, ya … ya, ne … ne.

«hem … hem (de)» says that two things hold TOGETHER: «Hem çalışıyor hem okuyor.», «Bu ev hem büyük hem de ucuz.» Adding «de» to the second part is very common.

«ya … ya (da)» offers a CHOICE; one of the two will happen: «Ya sen gel ya ben geleyim.», «Akşam ya sinemaya ya da tiyatroya gideceğiz.»

«ne … ne (de)» says that NEITHER holds: «Ne çay ne kahve içerim.» That is, I drink neither of them.

The most important rule for «ne … ne» is this: the verb of the sentence stays POSITIVE. The conjunction itself already carries the negation. «Ne çay ne kahve içerim.» is right; «Ne çay ne kahve içmem.» is wrong.

This rule is the hardest point for learners, because although the sentence means something negative, the verb is conjugated in the positive.

Both parts of these conjunctions are written SEPARATELY and stand before the elements they join: «hem Ali hem Ayşe», «ya bugün ya yarın», «ne dün ne bugün».

These conjunctions can join nouns, adjectives and clauses: «hem güzel hem ucuz» (adjectives), «hem geldi hem yardım etti» (clauses).

More than two elements can be joined: «Ne çay ne kahve ne de ayran içerim.»

In «ya … ya da» the second part usually takes «da»; the same happens in «hem … hem de». «de» is used in «ne … ne de» as well.
