Gereklilik Kipi (-mAlI)

Necessitative Mood

Level B1Verb Conjugation

The mood that states obligation and advice; it also expresses a strong guess.

The necessitative states that something needs to be done: «Yarın erken kalkmalıyım.», «Daha çok çalışmalısın.»

Its suffix is «-malı, -meli» and it obeys vowel harmony: verbs with back vowels take -malı (bakmalı, çalışmalı), verbs with front vowels take -meli (gelmeli, bilmeli).

The personal endings follow the suffix: gelmeliyim, gelmelisin, gelmeli, gelmeliyiz, gelmelisiniz, gelmeliler. In the first and second persons the suffix ends in a vowel, so a buffer «y» comes in.

In the negative the negative suffix attaches to the verb: gelmemeliyim, yapmamalısın, unutmamalıyız.

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately and the personal ending moves onto the particle: «Gitmeli miyim?», «Ne yapmalıyız?»

The FIRST meaning of this mood is necessity. The speaker thinks the action is right or obligatory: «Doktora gitmelisin.», «Bu ilacı günde iki kez almalısınız.»

That is why it is the commonest way of giving advice: «Daha az şeker yemelisin.», «Bence bu filmi mutlaka izlemelisiniz.»

The SECOND meaning is a strong guess. The speaker draws a conclusion from the evidence: «Işıklar yanıyor, Ali evde olmalı.», «Saat üç oldu, çocuklar acıkmış olmalı.»

The two meanings are told apart from the context. «Evde olmalısın.» is an obligation, while «Evde olmalı.» is usually a guess.

The necessitative reflects the speaker's own view. For an unavoidable obligation imposed from outside, the «zorunda» pattern is used; you will meet it in the next topic.

Frequently used adverbs: mutlaka, kesinlikle, artık, en kısa zamanda, bir an önce.
