Reported Speech: Questions
Level B2Reported Speech
Reporting questions with suffixes: gelip gelmeyeceğimi sordu, nereye gittiğimi sordu.
Questions are also reported with suffixes, like statements, but since there are two kinds of questions, there are also two ways of reporting them.
The first type of questions are those answered with yes or no. When these are reported, both the positive and negative of the verb are used: «Gelecek misin?» → «Gelip gelmeyeceğimi sordu.»
The structure is: verb + «-(y)Ip» + the negative of the same verb + «-DIk / -(y)AcAk» + possessive + accusative. Gel-ip gel-me-yeceğ-im-i.
The two parts are written separately: «gelip gelmeyeceğini», «bilip bilmediğini», «okuyup okumadığını».
This form looks long at first glance, but the logic is simple: Turkish states both options when reporting a "yes or no" question.
The second type of questions are those with a question word. Here the question word stays as it is, and only the predicate is nominalised: «Nereye gidiyorsun?» → «Nereye gittiğimi sordu.»
The question word itself can also take a suffix: «Kim geldi?» → «Kimin geldiğini sordu.» Here the word «kim» takes the genitive because it is the subject of the original sentence.
The question particle «mı, mi, mu, mü» is NOT used in reported speech. The form «Geldi mi diye sordu.» is direct speech; the suffixed form has no question particle.
Verbs used with this structure: sormak, merak etmek, bilmek, anlamak, öğrenmek. «Gelip gelmeyeceğini merak ediyorum.»
The tense is again determined by the suffix: «-DIk» for the past and present, «-(y)AcAk» for the future. «Geldin mi?» → «gelip gelmediğimi»; «Gelecek misin?» → «gelip gelmeyeceğimi».
The possessive suffix shows the subject of the original question: «Gelip gelmeyeceğimi sordu.» — the one who will come is me. «Gelip gelmeyeceğini sordu.» — the one who will come is you or him/her.
This structure is common in both everyday speech and written language: «Doktor ilaç kullanıp kullanmadığımı sordu.», «Hangi bölümde okuduğumu merak etmiş.»
