Postpositions of Similarity and Extent
Level A2Postpositions
The postposition «gibi», which makes comparisons of likeness, and «kadar», which states equality, measure and approximation.
«gibi» and «kadar» are postpositions with two different jobs. Both are written separately from the word before them and attach to it in meaning.
«gibi» makes a comparison of likeness; it answers «what is it like»: «Kardeşim babam gibi konuşuyor.», «Bu çocuk melek gibi.»
«kadar» states measure and degree; it answers «how much»: «Ali babası kadar uzun.», «Bu çanta seninki kadar ağır.»
At A1 you learned comparison with «-DAn daha», which states superiority. «kadar», on the other hand, states EQUALITY: that is the difference between «Ali, Ayşe'den daha çalışkan.» (Ali is ahead) and «Ali, Ayşe kadar çalışkan.» (the two are equal).
With personal pronouns the pronoun takes the genitive: benim gibi, senin gibi, onun gibi, bizim gibi, sizin gibi. The third person plural takes no ending: onlar gibi. The same rule holds for «kadar»: benim kadar, senin kadar, onun kadar, onlar kadar.
With nouns the noun takes no suffix at all: aslan gibi, buz gibi, kar gibi, çocuk gibi.
«kadar» also states an approximate quantity or length of time: «Bir saat kadar bekledim.», «İki kilo kadar domates aldım.», «Yüz kişi kadar vardı.»
Everyday Turkish has many set comparisons: buz gibi soğuk, aslan gibi güçlü, kar gibi beyaz, bal gibi tatlı.
Careful: do not confuse this with the «-(y)A kadar» pattern you learned at A1. In «Eve kadar yürüdük.» the word «kadar» marks a limit and the noun before it takes the dative suffix; in «Benim kadar yürüdün.» it states equality.
