Turkish Grammar › Verb Conjugation
Belirsiz Geçmiş Zaman (-mIş)
Evidential (Reported) Past Tense
Level A2Verb Conjugation
Past actions that the speaker did not witness, but heard from someone else or noticed afterwards.
The reported past describes past actions the speaker did NOT witness: «Ali dün İstanbul'a gitmiş.» The speaker did not see this but heard it from someone else.
What separates it from the definite past («-DI») you learned at A1 is witnessing. Someone who says «Dün yağmur yağdı.» saw the rain; someone who says «Dün gece yağmur yağmış.» worked it out in the morning from the wet roads.
The suffix has four forms and obeys vowel harmony: -mış, -miş, -muş, -müş. Bakmış, gelmiş, olmuş, gülmüş.
This suffix does NOT devoice. While «-DI» devoices as in «gitti, yaptı», «-mIş» always begins with «m»: gitmiş, yapmış, açmış, seçmiş.
The personal endings follow the suffix: gelmişim, gelmişsin, gelmiş, gelmişiz, gelmişsiniz, gelmişler.
In the negative the suffix «-ma, -me» comes first: gelmemiş, yapmamış, okumamışlar.
In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately: «Ali gelmiş mi?», «Sen anaokuluna gitmiş misin?»
The most familiar use of this tense is in folk tales, which are told in it from beginning to end: «Bir varmış bir yokmuş, evvel zaman içinde bir padişah varmış...»
Its second use is noticing something afterwards. Someone who realises something at that moment uses this tense: «Yağmur yağmış!», «Kek çok güzel olmuş!», «Cüzdanımı düşürmüşüm.»
Its third use is passing on what one has heard: «Ayşe hasta olmuş, bugün gelmeyecek.», «Yeni müdür çok iyiymiş diye duydum.»
Words often used with this tense: duyduğuma göre, galiba, demek ki, meğer.
