Belirsiz Geçmiş Zaman İsim Cümlesi (-(y)mIş)
Evidential Past of Nominal Sentences
Level A2Sentence Structure
The reported past of nominal sentences: öğrenciymiş, ucuzmuş, evde değilmiş.
At A1 you learned the past of nominal sentences with «-(y)DI»: «Ali o zaman öğrenciydi.» The speaker knows this or has seen it.
If we build the same sentence on information we have heard, we use «-(y)mIş»: «Ali o zaman öğrenciymiş.» The speaker heard it from someone else.
The suffix obeys vowel harmony: -mış, -miş, -muş, -müş. Yorgunmuş, güzelmiş, mutluymuş, küçükmüş.
If the word ends in a vowel, the buffer letter «y» comes in: hasta - hastaymış, öğrenci - öğrenciymiş, mutlu - mutluymuş.
An important difference: «-(y)DI» devoices after a voiceless consonant (küçüktü, sıcaktı), but «-(y)mIş» does NOT devoice: küçükmüş, sıcakmış, gençmiş.
The personal endings follow the suffix: öğrenciymişim, öğrenciymişsin, öğrenciymiş, öğrenciymişiz, öğrenciymişsiniz, öğrenciymişler / öğrencilermiş.
The negative is built with «değil» and the suffix attaches to «değil»: «Ali o gün evde değilmiş.», «Hava hiç de güzel değilmiş.»
In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately and the suffix attaches to the particle: «Ali hasta mıymış?», «Sınav zor muymuş?»
Sentences with «var» and «yok» take the same suffix: «Toplantıda otuz kişi varmış.», «Dün sınıfta kimse yokmuş.»
This pattern is used both to pass on what has been heard («Yeni öğretmen çok iyiymiş.») and to state something noticed afterwards («Bu lokanta çok ucuzmuş!»).
