Turkish Grammar › Converbs
Durum Ulacı (-(y)ArAk)
Manner Converb
Level A2Converbs
The converb that says HOW an action is done: koşarak geldi, gülerek konuştu.
The suffix «-arak, -erek» says how an action is done. There are two verbs in the sentence: one gives the main action, the other its manner. «Çocuk koşarak geldi.» — «geldi» is the main action, «koşarak» says how he came.
The suffix obeys vowel harmony: verbs with back vowels take «-arak» (bakarak, koşarak, çalışarak), verbs with front vowels take «-erek» (gülerek, gelerek, bilerek).
If the verb ends in a vowel, the buffer letter «y» comes in: bekle - bekleyerek, oku - okuyarak, başla - başlayarak.
The verb carrying the converb is NOT conjugated: it takes no tense or personal ending. The tense and person of the sentence are read from the second verb: «Gülerek konuştu.», «Gülerek konuşuyorum.», «Gülerek konuşacağız.»
The two actions must have the SAME subject. In «Koşarak geldim.» the one running and the one coming are both me. If the subjects differ, this converb cannot be used.
The two actions happen at the same time: smiling while speaking, running while coming.
This converb also shows the means and the way: «Otobüse binerek geldim.», «Çok çalışarak başardı.», «İnternetten bakarak öğrendim.»
Its negative form is «-mayarak, -meyerek», but it is rare in everyday speech; the converb «-madan, -meden» is usually preferred instead. You will meet it a few topics later.
The form «olarak» has become a set expression and is very common: «Burada öğretmen olarak çalışıyorum.», «Hediye olarak bir kitap aldım.»
Do not confuse it with the linking converb «-(I)p». «-(y)ArAk» states the MANNER of the action, while «-(I)p» links two actions IN SEQUENCE: that is the difference between «Koşarak geldi.» (how he came) and «Koşup geldi.» (first he ran, then he came).
