Purpose Constructions

Level A2Converbs

The patterns that say why we do something: öğrenmek için, gelmesi için, çıkmak üzere.

To state the purpose of an action — the answer to «why» — the postposition «için» is added to a nominalised verb: «Türkçe öğrenmek için Türkiye'ye geldim.»

«için» is a postposition, written separately, and it attaches to the nominalised verb before it.

If the two clauses have the SAME SUBJECT, «-mAk için» is used: «Ders çalışmak için kütüphaneye gittim.» — the one studying and the one going are both me.

If the SUBJECTS DIFFER, the nominalised verb takes a possessive ending and becomes «-mAsI için»: «Çocuğumun iyi bir okula gitmesi için çok çalışıyorum.» — I am the one working, my child the one who will go.

This distinction is the most important point of the topic. If the subject is the same there is NO possessive ending; if it differs, the possessive ending is OBLIGATORY.

Negative purposes are built the same way: «Geç kalmamak için erken çıktım.», «Hasta olmaman için sıkı giyin.»

The postposition «için» is used with nouns as well, and then it means «for whose benefit»: «Senin için aldım.», «Çocuklar için bir oyun alanı yapıldı.»

The pattern «-mAk üzere» carries two different meanings. The first is purpose, and it belongs to formal language: «Bilgi vermek üzere geldim.»

The second meaning is a moment very close at hand: «Toplantı başlamak üzere.», that is, it will start any minute. «Otobüs kalkmak üzere.», «Yemek bitmek üzere.»

The phrase «Görüşmek üzere!» is used when saying goodbye and means «see you soon».

Purpose is asked with «niçin, neden, ne için»: «Niçin Türkiye'ye geldiniz?» — «Türkçe öğrenmek için.»
