Zaman Ulaçları (-DIk / -(y)AcAk + iyelik + -(n)DA)

Temporal Clauses “When”

Level B2Converbs

A time converb with «…-dığında»: no one was home when I arrived.

In the previous unit you learned «-DIk» and «-(y)AcAk» as participle suffixes. When the same suffixes take the locative, they become a CONVERB and express time: «Eve geldiğimde kimse yoktu.»

The structure is: verb + «-DIk» + possessive suffix + locative suffix «-(n)DA». Gel-diğ-im-de.

The possessive suffix shows who performs the action: geldiğimde, geldiğinde (the same for "you" and "he/she/it"), geldiğimizde, geldiğinizde, geldiklerinde.

The sound change you learned with the participle also applies here: the «k» of «-DIk» softens to «ğ» between two vowels. Geldik + im + de → geldiğimde.

The same form is used when talking about the future; the suffix does not change: «Yarın eve geldiğinde beni ara.» The action has not happened yet, but «-DIğIndA» still applies. The form «-(y)AcAğIndA» is rare; instead one says «-(y)AcAğI zaman»: «Çıkacağım zaman haber veririm.»

The word «zaman» can replace this converb without changing the meaning: «geldiğimde» = «geldiğim zaman», «çıktığında» = «çıktığı zaman».

The negative form is regular: «Eve gelmediğimde merak ediyorlar.», «Anlamadığınızda sorun.»

Its meaning is very close to the «-(y)IncA» converb you learned in B1; both show the time of an event. The difference between them is PERSON: «-(y)IncA» takes no person suffix, while «-DIğIndA» clearly states who does the action through the possessive suffix.

So when the subject can stay unspecified, «-(y)IncA» is preferred: «Gelince konuşuruz.» does not say who will come; «Sen geldiğinde konuşuruz.» does.

This converb is very common in writing and narration: «Kapıyı açtığımda içeride kimse yoktu.», «Haberi duyduğumuzda hepimiz şaşırdık.»
