Question Words
Level A1Question Forms
The question words used to ask for information: nerede, nereye, nereden, ne zaman, nasıl, neden (niçin, niye), hangi, kaç.
There are two ways of asking a question in Turkish. The first is the question particle «mı, mi, mu, mü», which is answered with yes or no: «Geliyor musun?» The second is question words; these ask for information, and the answer is not yes or no: «Nereye gidiyorsun?» — «Okula.»
«Ne zaman?» asks about time: «Ne zaman geliyorsun?» — «Yarın.» If the clock time is meant, «saat kaçta» is used: «Film saat kaçta başlıyor?» — «Sekizde.»
«Nasıl?» asks about state, manner and means: «Nasılsınız?» — «İyiyim.», «İstanbul'a nasıl gidiyorsunuz?» — «Otobüsle.» To ask what a thing is like, the pattern «nasıl bir» is used: «Nasıl bir ev arıyorsunuz?»
«Neden?» asks for a reason. «Niçin?» and, in everyday speech, «niye?» mean the same: «Neden gelmedin?» — «Çünkü hastayım.»
«Hangi?» asks for a choice among several options and always stands before a noun: «Hangi otobüs merkeze gidiyor?», «Hangi kitabı okuyorsun?» Used alone, without a noun, it becomes «hangisi»: «Hangisi senin?»
«Kaç?» asks about number, and the noun after it takes no plural suffix: one says «Sınıfta kaç öğrenci var?», not «kaç öğrenciler». It has related forms as well: «kaçıncı» for rank («Kaçıncı katta oturuyorsun?»), «ne kadar» for the amount of uncountable things («Ne kadar şeker koyayım?»), and «kaçta» for clock time («Saat kaçta?»).
«Nerede?» asks about place. Its answer takes the locative suffix: «Kitabım nerede?» — «Masada.», «Nerede oturuyorsunuz?» — «Ankara'da oturuyorum.»
«Nereye?» asks about direction, the place one is going to. Its answer takes the dative suffix: «Nereye gidiyorsun?» — «Okula.», «Bu otobüs nereye gidiyor?» — «Taksim'e.»
«Nereden?» asks about the place one comes from. Its answer takes the ablative suffix: «Nereden geliyorsun?» — «İşten.» The question «Nerelisiniz?» belongs to the same family.
These three words are very similar; the difference is the suffix at the end: nere+de (place), nere+ye (direction), nere+den (starting point). The answer always carries the same suffix. (For a fuller explanation see topics 8, 14 and 15.)
If the sentence has a question word, «mı, mi, mu, mü» is not used as well. One says «Nerede oturuyorsun?», not «nerede oturuyor musun?».
