Contrastive Conjunctions

Level B2Conjunctions

Contrast and surprise connectors that link sentences: oysa kimse gelmedi, meğer tatilmiş, neyse ki yetiştim.

These conjunctions stand at the beginning of the sentence and build a CONTRAST or SURPRISE relation with the previous sentence.

«oysa/oysaki» emphasises the contradiction between what is expected and reality: «Herkes geleceğini söyledi, oysa kimse gelmedi.»

«hâlbuki» is synonymous with «oysa», a little more literary: «Sınavı geçemedim, hâlbuki çok çalışmıştım.»

«meğer» states a surprising fact learned afterwards; it is usually used together with «-mIş» (the reported past): «Meğer o gün tatilmiş, boşuna gitmişim.»

«mademki» accepts a premise and draws a conclusion from it; it links CAUSE-EFFECT, not contrast: «Mademki gelmeyeceksin, ben de kalmayayım.»

«ne var ki» expresses a reservation or limitation added to a situation: «Plan güzeldi, ne var ki bütçe yetmedi.»

«neyse ki» expresses RELIEF that a potentially negative situation turned positive: «Otobüsü kaçırdım, neyse ki bir sonraki hemen geldi.»

Most of these conjunctions stand at the beginning of the sentence and are usually set off with a comma.

«oysa», «hâlbuki», and «ne var ki» are often used interchangeably; the subtle difference between them is one of style.

These conjunctions carry a stronger, more literary emphasis than the simple contrast conjunctions «ama, fakat, ancak» you learned in B1.
