İşteş + Ettirgen Çatı (-(I)ştIr-)

Reciprocal-Causative Voice

Level B1Voice

Two voices combined: setting a reciprocal action going — tanıştırmak, barıştırmak.

A verb can take more than one voice suffix at a time. In this topic you will meet two of them combined: first the reciprocal, then the causative.

The pattern is: verb + «-(I)ş» (reciprocal) + «-DIr» (causative). Tanı-ş-tır-mak, barı-ş-tır-mak, görü-ş-tür-mek, bulu-ş-tur-mak.

The meaning is the sum of these two steps: one person makes TWO SIDES do something to each other. «Beni arkadaşınla tanıştır.» — they will do the meeting, you will bring it about.

Frequently used examples: tanıştırmak, barıştırmak, buluşturmak, görüştürmek, yarıştırmak, konuşturmak.

There are three parties in the sentence: the one who brings it about, and the two who do the reciprocal action. «Yıldız beni Tansu'yla tanıştırdı.» — Yıldız brought it about, Tansu and I were the ones who met.

The second party is marked with «ile» or the ending «-lA»: «Onları birbiriyle barıştırdım.», «Beni müdürle görüştürdüler.»

Compare this with the reciprocal voice from the previous unit: «Tanıştık.» is something two people did between themselves; «Bizi tanıştırdı.» is a third person bringing it about.

Some verbs built with the same suffix mean «to do a little, here and there»: karıştırmak, atıştırmak, koşuşturmak, araştırmak. They look the same in form but differ in meaning.

The negative and question forms are as with other verbs: «Onları barıştıramadım.», «Sizi tanıştırayım mı?»

This combination is much used in daily life: introducing a newcomer to the group, reconciling two friends who have fallen out, putting two people in touch on the phone.

In later units you will meet the passive voice and forms where all three voices are used together: «Toplantıda bizi de tanıştırdılar.» - «Toplantıda biz de tanıştırıldık.»
