Geniş Zaman (-(A/I)r / -mAz)

Aorist (Simple Present)

Level A2Verb Conjugation

The tense for habits, general truths and willingness: her sabah çay içerim.

The aorist describes states that always hold and habits that repeat: «Her sabah çay içerim.», «Su 100 derecede kaynar.»

The difference from the present tense matters. «Şu anda çay içiyorum.» describes a single moment; «Her sabah çay içerim.» describes a habit. The present says «now», the aorist says «always».

In the positive, the choice of suffix depends on how many syllables the verb has. With multi-syllable verbs it is easy: the suffix always has a close vowel — «-ır, -ir, -ur, -ür»: çalışır, öğrenir, oturur, düşünür, konuşur. If the verb ends in a vowel, only «-r» is added: bekler, okur, anlar, yürür.

With one-syllable verbs the suffix varies from word to word; there is no firm rule, so the common ones are learned. The main verbs taking «-ar, -er»: bakar, yazar, koşar, açar, kalkar, yatar, satar, çıkar, gider, güler, döner.

There are also one-syllable verbs that take «-ır, -ir, -ur, -ür»: gelir, bilir, alır, verir, görür, olur, bulur, kalır, vurur, durur. These two groups are learned over time through use.

The personal endings follow the suffix: gelirim, gelirsin, gelir, geliriz, gelirsiniz, gelirler.

The negative is the most distinctive thing about this tense: the aorist suffix drops and «-maz, -mez» takes its place. Gelmem, gelmezsin, gelmez, gelmeyiz, gelmezsiniz, gelmezler.

Note: in the negative the first person singular is «gelmem», not «gelmezim», and the first person plural is «gelmeyiz», not «gelmeziz». These two forms are exceptions and must be memorised.

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately: «Çay içer misin?», «Onlar gelir mi?» Negative questions use «-mez»: «Hiç gelmez mi?»

This tense also expresses willingness and politeness. «Bir çay içer misiniz?» is an offer, and «Kapıyı kapatır mısın?» is a polite request.

Frequently used time words: her gün, her sabah, her zaman, genellikle, bazen, sık sık, hiç, asla.
