Geçmiş Zaman İsim Cümlesi (-(y)DI)

Past Tense of Nominal Sentences

Level A1Sentence Structure

The suffix «-(y)dI» that puts nominal sentences into the past, together with its negative and question forms.

Nominal sentences describe a person, a thing or a state: «Ben öğrenciyim.», «Hava güzel.», «Ali evde.» To move such a sentence into the past, the suffix «-dı, -di, -du, -dü» is added at the end: «Ben öğrenciydim.», «Hava güzeldi.», «Ali evdeydi.»

Vowel harmony decides which form the suffix takes. If the last vowel is a or ı it is -dı, if e or i it is -di, if o or u it is -du, if ö or ü it is -dü: yorgundu, güzeldi, mutluydu, küçüktü.

If the word ends in a vowel, the buffer letter «y» comes in so that two vowels do not stand side by side: hasta - hastaydı, öğrenci - öğrenciydi, mutlu - mutluydu, sarı - sarıydı.

If the word ends in one of the voiceless consonants « f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p », the suffix devoices as well and becomes «-tı, -ti, -tu, -tü»: sıcak - sıcaktı, genç - gençti, küçük - küçüktü, serbest - serbestti.

The personal ending follows the suffix: öğrenciydim, öğrenciydin, öğrenciydi, öğrenciydik, öğrenciydiniz, öğrenciydiler. In the third person plural «Onlar öğrenciydi.» is also correct; the plural ending is not obligatory.

The negative is built with the word «değil», and the suffix attaches to «değil»: «Ben öğrenci değildim.», «Hava güzel değildi.», «Onlar evde değildi.»

In questions «mı, mi, mu, mü» is written separately and the suffix attaches to the particle: «Sen öğrenci miydin?», «Hava güzel miydi?», «Siz evde miydiniz?»

Sentences with «var» and «yok» are moved into the past with the same suffix: «Sınıfta yirmi öğrenci vardı.», «Dün evde kimse yoktu.»

These sentences are usually used together with words pointing to the past, such as dün, geçen hafta, geçen yıl, o zaman, eskiden.
