İstemek Yapısı (-mAk istemek)
The “Want To” Construction
Level A1Verb Constructions
To say you want to do something, the -mak/-mek form of the verb is used together with «istemek».
To say that we want to do something, Turkish uses the -mak or -mek form of the verb together with the verb «istemek». This structure is very common in everyday speech.
The pattern is: verb + -mak/-mek + istemek.
For example gitmek istiyorum (I want to go), çay içmek istiyorum (I want to drink tea), Türkçe öğrenmek istiyorum (I want to learn Turkish), film izlemek istiyorum (I want to watch a film).
The -mak or -mek ending is chosen by vowel harmony. Verbs whose last vowel is a back vowel take -mak, and those with a front vowel take -mek. For example yapmak, almak, gelmek, görmek.
The verb «istemek» is conjugated according to the subject. For example: Ben gitmek istiyorum. Sen dinlenmek istiyorsun. O uyumak istiyor. Biz gezmek istiyoruz.
In negative sentences it is «istemek» that becomes negative. For example: Gitmek istemiyorum. Kahve içmek istemiyor. Bugün dışarı çıkmak istemiyoruz.
In questions it is «istemek» that takes the question form. For example: Gelmek istiyor musun? Bir şey yemek istiyor musunuz? Dinlenmek istiyor mu?
This structure states only a wish. It does not say that the action happened, but that the person wants to do it. «Yüzmek istiyorum.» does not mean the person swam, only that they want to swim.
