Possessive Suffixes

Level A1Noun Case Suffixes

Possessive endings show who something belongs to.

Possessive endings show who a thing belongs to. In Turkish they are added to the end of the noun, so we can say that something is mine, yours, his/hers, ours or theirs.

In the 1st person singular the noun takes one of -ım, -im, -um, -üm. For example kitabım, evim, okulum, gözlüğüm.

In the 2nd person singular the noun takes one of -ın, -in, -un, -ün. For example kitabın, evin, araban, telefonun.

In the 3rd person singular the noun takes -ı, -i, -u, -ü, or -sı, -si, -su, -sü after a word ending in a vowel. For example kitabı, evi, arabası, annesi.

In the 1st person plural the noun takes one of -ımız, -imiz, -umuz, -ümüz. For example evimiz, okulumuz, arkadaşımız.

In the 2nd person plural the noun takes one of -ınız, -iniz, -unuz, -ünüz. For example eviniz, kitabınız, telefonunuz.

In the 3rd person plural the 3rd person singular ending is normally used, and because the owner is «onlar», the word «onların» appears in the sentence. For example: Onların evi büyük. Onların arabası yeni. This is very common in everyday speech.

Possessive endings can often be used together with personal pronouns: Benim kitabım, Senin kalemin, Bizim evimiz. But in everyday speech the meaning is clear without the pronoun, so sentences like «Kitabım burada.», «Kalemin masada.», «Evimiz büyük.» are also common.

Possessive endings answer the question «Kimin?» (whose). So whenever we want to state the owner of something, we use them.
