Passive Voice

Level B1Voice

Sentences where who did the action is unknown or unimportant: kapı açıldı.

The passive voice is used in sentences where WHO did the action is unknown or unimportant: «Kapı açıldı.», «Camlar kırılmış.»

What was the object in the active sentence becomes the SUBJECT in the passive: «Camı kırdılar.» - «Cam kırıldı.» The doer leaves the sentence.

The verb takes «-ıl, -il, -ul, -ül»: yap-ıl-mak, kır-ıl-mak, sat-ıl-mak, gör-ül-mek.

In two cases «-(I)n-» appears: when the verb ends in a vowel (oku-n-mak, ye-n-mek, de-n-mek) and when it ends in «l» (bil-in-mek, al-ın-mak, bul-un-mak).

If the doer is to be named, the postposition «tarafından» is used: «Bu köprü 1973'te inşa edildi.» - «Bu köprü mimar Kemal Bey tarafından tasarlandı.»

In formal language the suffix «-CA» does the same job: «Bakanlıkça açıklandı.», «Belediyece kaldırıldı.» This form belongs to news and announcements.

Intransitive verbs can also be made passive, and then the sentence has no subject at all: «Bu yoldan gidilir.», «Burada sigara içilmez.», «Nasıl gidilir?»

This IMPERSONAL use meets you often in daily life: on signs, in rules and in warnings. «Çimlere basılmaz.», «Ayakkabıyla girilmez.»

Recipes and instructions are written in the passive as well: «Yumurtalar kırılır, un eklenir, yarım saat pişirilir.»

The negative is regular: yapılmaz, açılmadı, satılmıyor, bilinmez.

Careful: the «-(I)n» of the reflexive and the «-(I)n» of the passive look the same. The sentence tells you which it is. In «Çocuk yıkandı.» it is reflexive if the child washed himself, passive if someone else washed him.

In the next topic you will meet the passive combined with the other voices.
