Zaman Edatları (-DAn önce / -DAn sonra / -mAdAn önce / -DIktAn sonra)
Time Postpositions: Before and After
Level A1Postpositions
These structures are used to say in which order two events happen.
In Turkish the words «önce» (before) and «sonra» (after) are used to say in which order two events happen. They can be used with nouns and with verbs.
When speaking about a noun or a time expression, the structures «-dan/-den önce» and «-dan/-den sonra» are used. For example: Dersten önce kahve içiyorum. Yemekten sonra yürüyüş yapıyoruz. Toplantıdan sonra eve gideceğim. In these structures the noun takes the ablative ending «-DAn».
When we want to link two verbs we use different patterns. To describe something that happens before another action is done, the structure «-madan/-meden önce» is used. For example: Uyumadan önce kitap okuyorum. Evden çıkmadan önce kapıyı kilitliyorum. Yemek yemeden önce ellerimi yıkıyorum.
To describe something that happens after another action is completed, the structure «-dıktan/-dikten/-duktan/-dükten sonra» is used. For example: Kahvaltı yaptıktan sonra okula gidiyorum. Ders çalıştıktan sonra dinleniyorum. Film bittikten sonra eve döndük.
In these structures «önce» always refers to the event that happens first and «sonra» to the one that happens second. That makes the order of events in the sentence clear and easy to follow.
These structures are very common in everyday speech. They are especially useful for describing daily routines, plans and the things done during a day: «-dan önce», «-dan sonra», «-madan önce» and «-dıktan sonra».
