Accusative Case

Level A1Noun Case Suffixes

The case ending used to mark definite, already known objects in a sentence.

The accusative marks that the object of the sentence is definite. In Turkish it is made with the endings -ı, -i, -u and -ü.

The accusative ending changes by vowel harmony. Words with back vowels take -ı or -u, words with front vowels take -i or -ü. For example kitabı, evi, okulu, günü.

If the word ends in a vowel, the buffer sound «y» comes before the accusative ending. That is why it is written arabayı, masayı, kapıyı, anneyi.

The accusative marks an object that both speaker and listener know, or that is otherwise definite. In «Kitabı okuyorum.» it is clear which book is being read. In «Kitap okuyorum.», by contrast, no particular book is meant — it describes the activity of reading in general.

The accusative is used most often with verbs like okumak, görmek, almak, sevmek, izlemek, beklemek, tanımak and bulmak. For example: Filmi izledik. Arkadaşımı gördüm. Telefonu aldım.

Personal pronouns can also take the accusative ending, giving beni, seni, onu, bizi, sizi, onları. For example: Beni dinle. Seni tanıyorum. Onları bekliyoruz.

The accusative answers the questions «Kimi?» (whom) and «Neyi?» (what). If those questions fit a sentence and the object is definite, the accusative is used.
