“Since” Clauses

Level B2Converbs

Expresses the time that has passed since an event: buraya taşındığımdan beri, geleli iki saat oldu.

The structures in this topic express the time that has passed from an event UNTIL TODAY: «Buraya taşındığımdan beri çok mutluyum.»

In A1 you learned the postposition «-DAn beri» with nouns: «sabahtan beri», «geçen yıldan beri». Now you will see the same postposition used with verbs.

The first structure is «-DIğIndAn beri», built from familiar parts: verb + «-DIk» + possessive suffix + ablative «-DAn» + «beri». Taşın-dığ-ım-dan beri.

The possessive suffix shows who performs the action: geldiğimden beri, geldiğinden beri, geldiğimizden beri.

You do not need to memorise the structure; you already learned all three parts separately. The only new thing is using them together.

The second structure is the suffix «-(y)AlI» and is shorter: «Buraya taşınalı üç yıl oldu.», «Seni göreli çok olmuş.»

«-(y)AlI» usually comes together with a clause stating the AMOUNT OF TIME that has passed: «… yemek yiyeli iki saat oldu», «… geleli bir hafta olacak».

In the third form the same verb is written twice: first the definite past, then the «-(y)AlI» suffix. «Geldi geleli hiç konuşmadı.», «Gittim gideli hiç görmedim.»

This third form is emphatic and usually carries a complaint or surprise: «Başladı başlayalı bir şey anlamadım.»

Negative forms are rare in these structures. The time during which something has NOT happened is usually expressed with «-mAyAlI»: «Görüşmeyeli çok oldu.»

The second part of the sentence is usually built with the present or the past tense: «Taşındığımdan beri burada oturuyorum.», «Geleli iki saat oldu.»
