Turkish Grammar › Verb Conjugation
Şimdiki Zaman (-Iyor)
Present Continuous Tense
Level A1Verb Conjugation
The tense for what is happening now: geliyorum, okuyor, çalışıyoruz.
The present continuous suffix is -yor. It is used for what is happening now or these days: Ali şimdi çalışıyor (Ali is working now).
If the verb stem ends in a consonant, a vowel comes in between, and that vowel follows vowel harmony: gel-i-yor, bak-ı-yor, gör-ü-yor, koş-u-yor. So there are four possibilities: -ıyor, -iyor, -uyor, -üyor.
If the stem ends in a vowel, that vowel DROPS: bekle- → bekliyor, oku- → okuyor, uyu- → uyuyor. Two short verbs also change: ye- → yiyor, de- → diyor.
Person endings come last: geliyor-um, geliyor-sun, geliyor, geliyor-uz, geliyor-sunuz, geliyor-lar.
In the negative, -me / -ma becomes -m plus a vowel: gelmiyorum, bakmıyor, görmüyor, okumuyor. Note that vowel harmony applies here too.
