Numbers
Level A1Numbers
Basic Turkish numbers, how they are built up by place value, and how they are written.
Numbers in Turkish are simple and regular. Once you know the basic digits (sıfır, bir, iki, üç, dört, beş, altı, yedi, sekiz, dokuz) and the tens (on, yirmi, otuz, kırk, elli, altmış, yetmiş, seksen, doksan), you can build every number easily.
For two-digit and larger numbers you say the tens first and then the ones. For example 15 is «on beş» and 42 is «kırk iki». The same rule holds for hundreds and thousands: 100 is «yüz», 1000 is «bin», 105 is «yüz beş» and 2026 is «iki bin yirmi altı».
When numbers are written out in text, each word is written separately (for example «on beş», «yüz yirmi üç»). Also, a noun after a number stays singular and takes no plural ending (-lar / -ler).
